Ahead of the opening of Saemangeum New Port in the second half of 2026, LUPRO attended the "Gimje City New Port Development Committee" held by Gimje City and proposed a plan to develop Saemangeum New Port into a green energy hub.
On the 9th, Gimje City held the "Gimje City New Port Development Committee" in the Gimje City Hall Situation Room. The meeting was attended by Gimje Mayor Jeong Seong-ju and members of the New Port Development Committee, comprised of experts in the shipping and logistics industries, to prepare for the opening of the second berth of Saemangeum New Port in the second half of 2026 and to effectively respond to evolving government policies.
The meeting was attended by private sector experts, including Seo Moon-seong, Chairman of the Gimje City New Port Development Committee; LUPRO Executive Director Ahn Jeong-dong; Hankyung Partners CEO Gong Hyeon-dong; and Korea Port and Logistics Strategy Institute Research Fellow Yang Hyeon-seok. The meeting also included local university professors. The meeting shared the decision made by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' 131st Central Port Policy Deliberation Committee to designate Saemangeum New Port as a nationally managed trade port. In anticipation of the opening of Saemangeum New Port's second berth in the second half of 2026, the meeting discussed in-depth measures to accelerate port revitalization and secure port competitiveness, future new industry development directions, and Gimje City's linkage strategy.
Furthermore, the attending committee members analyzed the new administration's port policy trends and regional pledges related to Saemangeum and the new port, as announced during the 21st presidential election. They engaged in a heated discussion and information exchange on the direction Saemangeum New Port should take and Gimje City's linkage strategy that aligns with government policies.
LUPRO Executive Director Ahn Jeong-dong, who attended the meeting, proposed establishing a green ammonia bunkering facility at Saemangeum New Port to establish a carbon-free ship fuel supply system. He stated that this should develop Saemangeum New Port and its hinterland into a carbon-free logistics hub, meeting global demand for green hydrogen and green ammonia.
LUPRO CEO Kim Se-ho stated, "We will supply green hydrogen ammonia as the foundational energy source for the development of Saemangeum New Port, thereby driving the sustainable future energy industry."
